TESTIMONIALS

Julio

Public Health AmeriCorps Member - Environmental Health Literacy & Placemaking Cohort

Serving in the Outdoor Play Cohort this year, I taught youth how to ride bikes, build and play in obstacle courses, and play sports outside. I’ve taught many children in our programs how to ride bikes on their own when they had never been on a bike before. We encourage the youth to be brave, trying new things, safety and responsibility. I’ve gained a better understanding on how to be more organized, creative and how to be a leader.

Joycelyn

Public Health AmeriCorps Member - Environmental Health Literacy & Placemaking Cohort

I learned how to interact with elementary school students by educating their minds on environmental protection agency lessons and topics about public health in the classroom. It's a great feeling of knowing that I made a difference in the East Harlem community as a Public Health Americorps Member. Serving with other Public Health AmeriCorps Members and volunteers in beautifying NYCHA's garden have built my teamwork and communication skills.

I’ve developed a strong passion for the field of public health. Through this program, I’ve also been able to strengthen my networking, leadership, and communication skills.

Jonah

Public Health AmeriCorps Member - Outreach & Referrals Cohort

I’ve learned a lot while serving in the Outreach Cohort. I was able to grow as a leader by teaching groups of 14-15-year-old OLA-SYEP interns about the social determinants of health. Also, I am proud that we were able to share information and give referrals to participants, staff and families in East Harlem that needed services. I feel like we were able to help many people in the community.

I serve because I believe the impact you have on youth can be long lasting. I want to help youth lead healthy lifestyles so it may carry on to better those around them as well.

I serve to receive a Segal Education Award that I can put towards my education. I serve to spread positive community service in East Harlem.

Yahaira

Public Health AmeriCorps Member - Outreach & Referrals Cohort

Teaching our interns how to connect with people helped us both grow. As I guided them, I had the chance to strengthen my own communication and leadership skills. Leading a team of youth showed me how important it is to listen and rely on others to get a job done. Each lesson helped create future health advocates, eager to help their own neighborhoods.
