Concrete Safaris' City Surfers is a 5-day/week after school program for 2nd - 5th graders who learn soft and hard outdoor leadership skills and then have the opportunity to exercise those skills and take action in the community while utilizing outdoor spaces for community building events, forming areas that their community comes to respect and utilize.

Where & When?

Our workshops are mostly outdoors in Jefferson and Washington Houses, local parks, and on city streets as well as at cultural institutions and activities in and around New York City.

Five afternoons of free after school until 5:30PM from September - June

Opportunities to learn how to ride a bike, garden, take pictures, camp, and more

Life skills workshops like communication, decision-making, self-management, and more

Field trips to cultural sites and institutions in Manhattan; Most participants do not travel outside of a 6-block radius from their homes

A hot meal, which may be the last one the child eats that day

Homework help, which may be the only place the child has support

Referrals for health and life issues to neighborhood providers, which can include physical or mental health, homeless or domestic violence shelters, employment, and housing
