TRANSFORMATION CELEBRATION

Hello Friend,

Can you imagine a time when things were more challenging or uncertain for children, youth, and families? Hundreds of young people stuck inside their homes for nearly two years without being able to play outside, go to school, see friends, or breathe without a face mask turned to Concrete Safaris this year for normalcy.

Amidst our pandemic outreach calls and emails, David, a young man who is now in college and who interned at our Outdoor Leadership Academy-SYEP for 5 years, shared that he was planning Grandpa’s funeral as Mom was grief-stricken. We were able to share a funeral cost reimbursement grant and empathy. Six months later, Mom moved his younger two brothers South after Mom & Dad divorced, and David had moved to college. Both brothers subsequently returned to NYC. His youngest brother, Delano, has volunteered for 5 summers at JungleGym, our annual street-based obstacle event, and this summer will join CS for his first paid internship. David’s middle brother who interned with us for two summers became a paid after school assistant group lead this school year, and will remain with CS through our first 6-week summer camp. Their world fell apart, and David, Daniel, and Delano reached Concrete Safaris for stability and nurturing where they were invited, welcomed, and given the honor of responsibility within the CS Community.

David, Daniel, Delano, and so many others turned to CS and now we turn to you. Our goal is to raise $150,000 before the end of the year to celebrate 15 Years in East Harlem. Meeting our goal will help serve 144 children with free, year-round, outdoor, educational childcare, nearly 500 youth with paid internships, 3 schools with outdoor science education and space, 100’s of public housing residents with food and beauty outside their windows, and opportunities for young people to use their voices to transform the physical environment where they live, learn, and play, working with government and partners like you. Every gift we receive means one more youth will know they have power and somewhere to grow healthier. Youth, like David, Daniel, and Delano, will feel connectivity because of the healthy opportunities created by hundreds of youth in CS programs supported by you.

From the bottom of our hearts, thank you for all the ways you have stood by our participants in years past, this year, and for all you will do for years to come. If you could read the emails from youth asking how they can now give back for all that has been given to them, you would know the respect and nurturing you make possible here. It takes each and every participant, family, staff, volunteer, and partner caring about each other to pull through tough times. In 15 years of servant leadership, we are grateful that you are in the Concrete Safaris Community.

Mac Levine, MPH, Founding Executive Director
